Ok.
After the recent Euro election results providing the British National Party (BNP) with a platform to voice their undeniably controversial ideas, I decided that I wanted to write a piece on it.
This isn’t a conventional post though. I’m not going to rant on about their election. To be honest what concerned me more about their election wasn’t the fact that they got in. It was the fact that there is an existing segment of the population that either is unwittingly racist, or unwittingly short-sighted.
We’re told by the press and the media that the BNP success was down to two key reasons: The follies of the larger parties in the expenses row and the poor turnout that continues to decline year on year (currently 43% of voters turned out). The press might be right for the most part in that, had the expenses row not taken place, perhaps Nick Griffin’s face wouldn’t have been beaming.
But I think there’s more to it.
I’ve lived and been to a broad(ish) spectrum of towns and cities in the UK. I’ve met a broad(ish) range of people. Unfortunately too, I’ve encountered lots of racist moans and groans. I’m not talking about overt, tomorrow’s Ku Klux membership kind of racism. I’m talking about the “get out of our country” racism. Lots of people do this. LOTS. It shocked me the other day, when my cousin said to me “A lot of people agree with some of the BNP’s policies”. WHAT?! A lot of people agree that politics should be left to white people?! A lot of people agree that the Holocaust was all some argy bargy made up by the Jewish historians?!
She was trying to say that people agree with the sense of fear and insecurity that they feel from being in an ever-increasingly diverse society. They agree with the idea that Britain is becoming over-populated and cannot burden any more “benefit stealing immigrants”. Maybe it’s busier now than it has ever been. But there’s no need to discriminate to solve it.
What people don’t realise is that for the most part, the foreign EU and commonwealth workers (thereby the majority of immigrants in the UK) are perfectly entitled to the benefits we offer. Much like the fact that we are entitled to support in their countries. As members of the EEC, we agreed to this. It’s all perfectly legal (info). The EU and commonwealth countries (for the most part) share their social securities with us. Except Australia. Apparently too many BRITISH nationals were abusing the system.
Do people not remember that the “indigenous” identity of this country IS originally of the continent?
The BNP stated “British Jobs for British People” as a policy, stating that the “indigenous” (that word AGAIN) population were being discriminated against.
Hardly.
What people are experiencing now is two things.
First of all, a recession. Duh?! It is going to be difficult for everyone. Not just you, you poor deluded white man.
Secondly, there is no discrimination. What Nick Griffin is spilling his milk over is simply a levelling of the playing field. For years, whether it was due to racism or not, the white potential employee got the priority on the list. First dibs, if you will. What’s happened now, is that skin colour is no longer an issue. People are being accepted for their merits and achievements. Which leaves the unqualified white men at the bottom of the pile when compared to everyone else who bothered to put the effort in at school sit ahead of him in line. There’s no prejudice. There’s equality.
My wife tells me that the very same thing happened in America upon the freedom of the slaves. The white, wealthy farmers knew the game was up and let it be, they paid the wages and moved with the times. That left the white “crackers” (wife’s term), the less wealthy paid workers, to sit about complaining about how they didn’t get any jobs anymore, because they were up against men willing to work HARD for their money.
If Nick Griffin and the BNP want equality, then they should look at the people they are trying to support. The ones who would RATHER claim benefits than go to work. The mothers that generate baby after baby, without a spare thought for provision. We should be looking to educate, rather than discriminate. Part of being superbly British is appreciating the diversity of our country. The most prideful claim of every Briton (aside from World Cup victory) is of the Empirical age of Victoria. We are now reaping the rewards of this – our little land is revered by other nations. English is the worldwide language of business.
Part of being the best is accepting the cost of being the best. We attract migration workers because we offer something they aspire to. Let’s not let Nick Griffin ruin that, and everything the soldiers of the Second World War fought for.
